With 100 Days To Go, the Countdown to Tokyo 2020 Begins

()

TOKYO, JAPAN – A ceremonial launch of the hundred-day countdown to the start of the Olympic Games was held at the Tokyo City Hall today. Announcements were not made by the media to avoid crowds and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The 2.6-meter tall mascots of the Olympic and Paralympic Games were seen at the city hall for the event. Miraitowa, the Olympics mascot, is named after the Japanese words for “future” and “eternity”. Someity, the Paralympics mascot, is named after Someiyoshino, a type of cherry blossom. The mascots designed by Rio Taniguchi were presented back in February 28, 2018.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 was postponed from July 23 to August 8, 2021 due to COVID-19. It was supposed to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020.

An estimate of 10,000 athletes are expected to compete for 330 sets of medals in 33 sports. Participants of the Games will enter the country following a simplified scheme. A two-week quarantine is no longer needed. At the moment, organizers plan to conduct PCR tests every four days. However, in the future, they may change the frequency of tests and do them more often.

As a result of improving measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the budget for the Games has risen to $15.9 billion.
